Overview
The City of Brookings is fortunate to have a variety of volunteer opportunities geared toward individuals whose knowledge, dedication and unique skills contribute to real and lasting change in our community. Whether you like a hands-on approach or you are more issues-oriented, the City has volunteer opportunities to offer. Check out the various volunteer programs, committees, and commissions below to find the right fit for you, and then....come join us!
KIDTOWN RECONSTRUCTION
Skilled carpenters needed to participate in the construction of the new Kidtown play structure between September 7 and October 6, 2023. The project is estimated to require nearly 2000 man-hours over the course of the four-week construction period. Volunteers will be asked to assist Leathers and Associates who designed and built the original Kidtown in 1995 as well as designed the new Kidtown to be constructed.

Capella By The Sea Docents
Docents keep the Capella open to the public during the day from May to October and in the evening in December during Natures Coastal Holidays light show. Docents greet visitors and act as an ambassador for the Capella, Azalea Park, and the City of Brookings, not only answering questions about the Capella and park, but also about the weather, the beaches, restaurants, hiking and directions. Park Rangers
Park Rangers patrol the City's designated outdoor spaces, ensuring that residents and visitors are not disrupting the natural environment or guest experiences as well as providing maps, and pointing out areas of special interest among other duties. Park Maintenance
Park Maintenance volunteers perform all aspects of park and trail maintenance as assigned by the Parks and Planning Manager, work leader, or designee. See the full Park Maintenance Volunteer Job Description (PDF). Contact the Parks Department for more information and an application.
Police Reserves
Police Reserves are fully sworn, volunteer police officers and subject themselves to the same risks and stress as any other officer. Contact the Police Department for more information and an application.
Volunteer Firefighters
The City's Fire Department is comprised of an active and highly trained volunteer firefighter organization. Contact the Fire Department by phone or in person for more information.
CITY COMMITTEES and COMMISSIONS
Application to Serve on a Committee/Commission (PDF)
Budget Committee
Responsible for setting the city budget each fiscal year and establishing a final tax levy for the City. Volunteer opportunities available by Council appointment only. For more information, view the Budget Committee page.
Parks and Recreation Commission
Reviews and makes recommendations to the City Council on matters relating to City parks. Volunteer opportunities available by Council appointment only. For more information view the Parks and Recreation Commission page.
Planning Commission
Reviews and makes decisions related to land use matters and makes recommendations to the City Council regarding changes to the Brookings Municipal Code, City boundary changes, and matters related to the acquisition and development of public facilities and transportation.
