KidTown

A Place

Just For

Kids

During the month of May, 1994, a team of volunteers constructed KidTown in the northwest corner of Azalea Park.  The wooden structure, featuring turrets, slides, tunnels and swings rose quickly as 1400-1600 volunteers turned out to build it over a five day construction period.

Adult supervision is encouraged while children are at play.  We encourage adults to make sure the following rules are enforced:

  1. Slides are made for sliding, not jumping.
  2. Treat someone the way you want to be treated.
  3. Respect one another an done another's play space.
  4. Take turns.
  5. This is our playground, let's keep it clean and put trash in the trash can where it belongs.
  6. Refrain from improper language.
  7. No smoking.
  8. No animals allowed.
  9. Most importantly, please respect the playground and its equipment.
  10. Have fun!!

Jubilation Statue

Five figures with arms uplifted representing the combined efforts of the many volunteers who worked to make Azalea Park a community showcase greet visitors as they enter the park.  A single octagon-shape pedestal four and a half feet high made of pebble-dash cement with round inserts designed to accommodate donor plaques supports a stainless steel sculpture.  Two smaller matching pillars were placed at the entrance to the upper garden.

Gazebo

The gazebo was renovated with a new roof, designer cement flooring and new cement steps around two sides.  The entrance is now wheelchair accessible and the cement walk leading up the hill to the gazebo has been scored to make it skid proof.  The City extended the walkways started on both sides of the lawn area leading to the stage and connected the two in front of the stage.
